Tackling some of the biggest headaches in Mining

Loadscan created Mine Payload Technologies, a specialist mining division within the company, to deliver deeper insights and added value to the mining production sector.

Through this focused business unit, Loadscan supports the global mining sector by delivering innovative and unique mining features and enhanced capabilities that deliver measurable Return on Investment.

Under-loading could be costing you a fortune

Underloading requires additional truck movements to shift the same amount of material, increasing costs and reducing profits.

Our expertise in mining and technology enables us to help mines maximise productivity by optimising every load, thereby increasing trucking factors and improving profits. Our load volume scanner accurately measures all loads and automatically generates 3D scan images that clearly indicate under-loading, enabling corrective action (including operator training and coaching) to be taken.

Overloading increases fuel costs and CO2 emissions

In an Australian technical paper titled, “Haul truck fuel consumption and CO2 emission under various engine load conditions”, the researchers determined that overloading a large mining truck (CAT 797B) by as little as a 10% could increase fuel consumption and costs by nearly US$367,000 per annum and add 900mt CO2 emissions per truck.

Managing carry-back to improve operations

Our surface and underground mining technology helps to reduce carry-back, a common problem wherever material is being shifted which can seriously impact productivity.

By scanning all loads with the Loadscan MPS, carry-back out of the mine is accounted for and can be deducted from shift tallies, improving accuracy of actual loads shifted.

In addition, carry-back can immediately be identified through data and alerts on the message board, enabling removal from the bin.

The hidden costs of off-centre loading

We use our advanced underground and surface mining technology to reduce off-centre loading, an issue that can substantially increase operating costs.

Uneven load distribution adds stress to truck components, reducing their working life and adding substantial costs to your operation. In addition, this can create excessive tyre wear, voiding warranties and requiring premature replacement.

The 3D scans generated by the system provide a valuable visual reference that can be used for training and coaching loader operators.

  • Off-centre loading is calculated and reported within the four quadrants of the truck bin.
  • Visual warning indicators are displayed in real-time on the operator console, Overview screen and message board

Measuring truck payloads by weight or volume?

Volume scanning substantially enhances the accuracy of payload measurement.

  • Volume scanning is complementary to measuring weight with scales.
  • By combining weight AND volume, measuring material bulk densities and payloads is more accurate.
  • Converting from volume back to weight using bulk density factors has proven more accurate than using onboard or dynamic weighing systems.
  • Measure ACTUAL load volumes in a truck or trailer bin, eliminating guesswork.

Benefits of Mining Production

Maximized Productivity
By accurately measuring every load with 3D scan images, mining production is optimized. This reduces under-loading, boosts trucking factors, and increases profits.

Reduced Fuel Costs and Emissions
Preventing overloading lowers fuel consumption and cuts CO₂ emissions, helping mining operations save significant annual costs while improving sustainability.

Improved Accuracy and Efficiency
Advanced scanning technology accounts for carry-back and off-centre loading, ensuring precise load tallies and reducing hidden operational costs.

Enhanced Equipment Lifespan
Even load distribution minimizes stress on trucks, reduces tyre wear, and extends component life, resulting in lower maintenance expenses and downtime.

FAQs About Mining Production

How does under-loading affect mining production?

Under-loading requires more truck movements to move the same material, which increases costs and reduces overall productivity.

Why is overloading a problem in mining production?

Overloading raises fuel consumption, adds CO₂ emissions, and leads to higher operating costs, including expensive truck maintenance.

What role does volume scanning play in mining production?

Volume scanning accurately measures load volumes, eliminates guesswork, and complements weight scales for improved payload accuracy.

How does carry-back impact mining operations?

Carry-back reduces actual load capacity and lowers efficiency, but scanning technology helps detect and manage it in real time.

What are the risks of off-centre loading in mining production?

Off-centre loading stresses truck components, causes premature tyre wear, and shortens equipment lifespan, leading to costly repairs.
